2/2/16 SAF Meeting at Marin YC

The SAF Station held its February 3, 2016 meeting at the Marin Yacht Club in San Rafael, CA. Our speaker was David Helvarg, Exec. Dir., of the Blue Frontier Campaign. David is a marine conservation activist and author who spoke about his research into writing his 2010 book, "Rescue Warriors: The U.S. Coast Guard, America's Forgotten Heroes." David had many fascinating anecdotes and facts that he gleaned during his research that are extemely appropos given that the current release of the iMax, 3-D movie, "The FINEST HOURS," is in theaters right now. David knows well the history of the daring Coast Guard rescue off of Cape Cod in 1952, when two oil tankers were sunk during a blizzard and heroic "Coasties" rescued the crews. David supplied us with background to that event as well as others in Coast Guard history. David made the point that the USCG, for all of its safety, policing, protection and interdiction duties, is understaffed (only 42,000 members) and underfunded. It was a very informative presentation that was enjoyed by all.
